PARTY AND TABLE MANNERS
Men should neither loosen ties nor take off jackets, no matter how
hot it is, unless the host or hostess suggests it.
Don't arrive too early, stay too late, or drink or eat too much in
between.
Don't load too much on your plate the first time through a buffet
line.
Don't leave food on your plate just to be polite. These days, with
so much starvation and poverty, it is wrong to leave food on your
plate.
Do not ask for another glass of wine between courses. The host may be
changing from white to red wine and won't want to open a new (and surely
expensive bottle in the interim.
Never smoke without asking first, and in no circumstance before dessert
is cleared.
Don't turn to one side to blow your nose. The guests on that side will
not appreciate the gesture. Blow your nose straight down and into a cloth
handkerchief, preferably monogrammed.
Send a thank-you note as soon as possible, perhaps accompanied by
flowers or a box of chocolates.
